Following victory in the first Democracy Cup, Asante Kotoko secured a match against DC United.

Asante Kotoko

Asante Kotoko defeated rivals Hearts of Oak in a dramatic match at the Accra Sports Stadium to win the first Democracy Cup and earn a much sought-after match against Major League Soccer's DC United in the United States.

Under the direction of head coach Prosper Narteh Ogum, Kotoko featured a dynamic lineup that included several recent additions. With numerous scoring opportunities in the first half of the game, the team controlled. The game's turning point came from a penalty kick in the thirty-first minute, which veteran midfielder Justice Blay converted with assurance to put Kotoko ahead.

But Hearts of Oak rallied in the second half, drawing even five minutes after the break thanks to a contentious header from new acquisition Asamoah Boateng Afriyie, which required medical treatment for goalkeeper Frederick Asare.

Following a fierce struggle, Kotoko emerged victorious as Peter Amidu scored a spectacular goal to win the match and win the Democracy Cup. Kotoko will visit Washington to play DC United later this year as a prize for their victory.
